What is Autogenic Training?

Have you ever said to yourself, “Relax and calm down”? Does it work for you? Autogenic training is a technique that shows you how to make those words you utter before a big speech or after a harrowing day at work, have an effect on your body.

Autogenic training is designed to teach your body how to do just what you want it to do. It sounds hard but with practice it can be done. You can learn to change your life and Health with this technique.

What in particular can you make your body do? We are not talking about getting the nerve to jump off a cliff with a bungee cord tied to your leg. This is about changing the internal environment of your body. Things like reducing blood pressure and stress symptoms, as well as learning methods of deep relaxation, are taught through autogenic training.

Autogenic training has been shown to reduce several problems that you might experience in your body. Using the exercises has helped others to combat diarrhea, constipation, High Blood Pressure, ulcers, headaches, stomach concerns, irregular heartbeat and asthma - to name a few. It sounds like mysticism but it is a method to get in touch with your body and how it is working.

The exercises used in autogenic training are learned by watching an instructor or reading up on how to perform them. There are six main exercises. They are performed from a place of comfort like a chair or a recliner. It takes regular practice to get good at the techniques. How long it takes to master them depends on your dedication and focus - around half a year is common.

The process is something like hypnosis. You are in a relaxed state and your mind is free, not concentrating on any particular thing. Verbal cues and your imagination are used to bring about the changes that you are trying to achieve. It is like The Mind and The Body are communicating with you as the conduit instead of a wall.

This type of training has been used by monks and holy men for thousands of years. They learn to slow their heart rate, change their body temperature and lower blood pressure through autogenic training. These people perfect the mind/body connection to change conditions over which you would normally not have control.

Autogenic training is considered to be safe and effective. However, it is not indicated for people less than five years of age or anyone with emotional instability. Autogenic training is not designed to take the place of conventional medicine. For example, if the doctor is treating you for diabetes, do not stop your medicine just because you are practising autogenic training.

Use autogenic training safely and wisely. Consult your doctor about the possible uses for your health condition. He may want to supervise your process. At the least, you will learn to eliminate and prevent stress from being a problem in your life.
