Barbara & Susan's Guide to the Empty Nest

Imagining life without children is quite a different concept to grasp for pretty much all mothers. After nurturing and guiding them through, from infancy to young adulthood, with all its ups and down, tears and laughter, it suddenly becomes time to "let them go" into the big world on their own. Mothers undoubtedly feel as if a big part of their primary focus in life, as well their identity, is gone. Depression, tearfulness and a general feeling of sadness can follow. If you are about to experience the empty nest or your kids have already left home, then it might be helpful to know that you are not alone in your feelings. It is always helpful to talk to other mothers about how you feel or read up on it in an appropriate book, such as Barbara & Susan's Guide to the Empty Nest.

The two authors and proud mothers and grandmothers are well known writers. In their book Barbara & Susan's Guide to the Empty Nest they guide you gently and with lots of insight through the many stages and emotions of empty nesters. They encourage you to work through your feelings of sadness and pick up your life, have dreams again, get up and face new challenges and create a new you. Most importantly, they tell you that your feelings are normal and that you need to embrace them to start this new chapter of your life.

Overall, this is a beautiful and sensitive book written by two experienced empty nesters and authors. I would recommend this to anybody, ideally before experiencing the ups and downs of kids leaving home. This is certainly a very worthwhile book to read and read again, when the going gets a bit tough.
