Causes of Eye Twitching
* Stress – Stress can have physical manifestations in the body. One can be eye twitching, especially if stressful situations in your life lead to a lack of sleep. When the body is sleeping, the eyes get to close and rest. Without adequate sleep, the muscles could spasm.
* Dry eyes – Some people have a genetic condition called dry eyes. It occurs when the eyes don’t receive adequate lubrication. It can lead to constant blinking and irritation. Rubbing of the eyes can lead to muscle spasms that result in twitching or tics.
* Allergies – Allergies can lead to histamine being released in the eyelids. Rubbing, itching and swelling around the eyes are all symptoms of an allergic reaction. The eyes muscles can move uncontrollably as a result.
* Eye strain – Do you work on the computer a lot? Looking at the bright screen all day can lead to headaches and strain on the eyes. Holding the eyes open for long periods of time without rest for the eyelid muscles can lead to spasms also.
* Overstimulation – Have you thought about how much caffeine you drink? If you are using it to stay awake it can affect the muscles under your eyes. They may twitch as a result of the stimulation.
Remedies for Eye Twitching
While most eyes don’t twitch all the time, it can cause a problem if you are not used to it happening. Here are some possible remedies based on the causes above.
* Stress – Practice stress management. Dealing with problems as they arise with constructive solutions can reduce your overall level of anxiety.
* Dry eyes – There are prescription drops that your doctor can recommend to combat dry eyes. When the moisture is restored, you may not blink as much.
* Allergies – There are over-the-counter eye drops that can prevent the release of histamine in allergy sufferers. If they don’t work, try prescription medications to control the allergies altogether.
* Eye strain – Use a glare-reducing screen on your computer. Reducing the glare can reduce eye strain. Also, try wearing reading glasses. Your eyes may be undergoing changes that have led to the strain.
* Overstimulation – Cut back on stimulants, especially at bedtime. Get more sleep each night to give the eyelid muscles a chance to relax.
* Injections – For serious and constant eye twitching a doctor may diagnose you with blepharospasm. One treatment for this condition is Botox injections to paralyze the muscles.
