Alternative Health Supplements

Over the past few years, alternative health supplements have more popular than ever.

The benefits are felt not only in the prevention of disease, but also in getting a good night’s sleep, losing weight, gaining muscle and just the promotion of well-being. I The vast variety can be overwhelming for the consumer, so it is best to know what you are looking for prior to purchase. Also, bear in mind that dosages and active ingredients vary from manufacturer to manufacturer so always check the label.

Several of these supplements can interact with medications commonly prescribed by your doctor. In particular, some blood pressure and heartburn medications can interact with them so be sure to always tell your doctor what you are taking.

There are several types of these alternative supplements. Some, such as creatinine and protein powders, are helpful in bulking up your muscles.

Others, like ginko biloba and St. John’s Wort affect the brain, helping with mild forgetfulness and depression. Garlic extract and fish oil, containing omega 3 fatty acids, are used to promote heart healthiness and to decrease cholesterol and triglycerides. Black cohash may help with hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause.

Another effective menopause therapy is increasing your intake of soy products, or taking soy extracts, that has been used in Asia for thousands of years.

Another group gaining popularity are the antioxidants, which are natural products that protect against cancer. These antioxidants can be found in green tea and certain dark colored fruits. Antioxidants are also found in pill form as different polyphenols or vitamin E.

This list is by no means comprehensive, and many quality alternative health supplements are out there and can be found easily at your local health food or grocery store.
